Dr. Derek Van Deventer
Dr Derek van Deventer qualified in 1971 at the University of Pretoria. He spent some time working at Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, and Addington Hospital. He then spent a year working as a locum in various private practices before spending a year in the Antarctic as the team doctor.
He established his own private practice in Umhlanga in 1976 and has been part of the local Umhlanga community ever since. He was delighted when his daughter Heather joined the practice, ensuring that his patients could continue to receive quality medical care for many more years to come.
Dr. Heather Theron
Dr. Heather Theron qualified in 2001 at the University of Pretoria, following in her father’s footsteps. After completing her internship and community service training, as well as a diploma in anaesthetics in Pietermaritzburg, she spent time working in the UK and New Zealand. In 2006, she returned home to Umhlanga, where she joined her father, Dr. Derek van Deventer, in private practice.
A genuine family practice that strives to live by Proverbs 17:22 — “A cheerful heart is good medicine.”

She is passionate about providing patient-centered care, with a focus on preventive medicine, chronic disease management, and holistic family healthcare. Heather is married to Philip, and together they have three beautiful children.
Dr Louise Wang
Dr Louise Wang qualified in 2005 at the University of Stellenbosch. After her internship at RK Khan hospital she spent 5 years at Stanger Regional hospital, working in outlying clinics, accident and emergency and ophthalmology. Thereafter she relocated with her husband to rural Tanzania where she enjoyed doing volunteer work at the local hospital and schools.
On moving back to Ballito she worked as a long-term locum at a GP practice in Tongaat and has been doing private GP locums since. She joined Dr Theron’s team in 2021 and has loved the warm family feel of the practice and meeting all the lovely people of Umhlanga and the surrounds. She is married and has 3 primary school children.
